NGOs responsible for Sri Lanka losing membership of UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC)! – Human Rights Minister
An organizational campaign carried out by a group including NGOs was responsible for Sri Lanka losing the vote at the UN for the membership of UNHRC says Minister of Human Rights Mahinda Samarasinghe. Several organizations including Jimmy Carter Centre in the USA, Human Rights Watch had asked member countries of the UN not to allow Sri Lanka to retain her membership in UNHRC.

Sri Lanka, Japan, South Korea, Pakistan, Bahrain and East Timor contested for four seats for the Asian Region in the council. Japan, South Korea, Pakistan and Bahrain were elected while Sri Lanka and East Timor were ousted.
