Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission orders the police to pay compensation to aborigines
Feb 12, Colombo: Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission today ordered the Inginiyagala police to pay compensation to aborigines (Veddas) at Rathugala in Mahiyangana over a disgraceful incident on them.
When the case was heard this morning Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission ordered three police officers of Inginiyagala police to pay Rs. 5,000 to an aborigine deputy leader in Rathugala, Thalebandarage Gobila and his tribe.
According to the Commission the aborigines have lodged a complaint against the Inginiyagala police on July 9th 2008 over an issue regarding the police conduct.
The deputy leader of aborigines has complained that the three police officers of the Inginiyagala police, IP J.K.B.Hewage, Sergeant B.H Gamini and Constable H.T Anura Kumara have assaulted him and made him kneel down over a clash with another villager.
Human Rights Commission said that this was the first time they received this kind of complain from the aborigines.
