Aug 18th, 2012

More than 30 people have been killed after South African police opened fire with automatic weapons on striking platinum miners in the country’s North West province on Thursday. Police spokesman Zweli Mnisi gave the figure today after yesterday’s shooting in Marikana, just north-west of Johannesburg.

The mass killing came on the sixth day of a strike by miners of the British owned Lonmin Plc, the world’s third-largest platinum mining company.
