Elections to the 47-member human rights council are scheduled for today (21st). Bahrain, Japan, Pakistan, South Korea, Sri Lanka, and Timor are running for four seats allocated to Asian states.
According Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama Sri Lanka has a good chance of being elected to the council.
However, FORMER US President Jimmy Carter’s Atlanta based Carter Center, in a statement issued on Friday (16th), has urged the United Nations General Assembly not to re-elect Sri Lanka to the Human Rights Council (HRC) in the upcoming council elections.
