Patriotic National Movement (PNM) yesterday urged the authorities to take deterrent action against the NGOs that had acted in a manner prejudicial to the national security on the pretext of providing tsunami relief. It said the government appears to have unwittingly paved the way for certain NGOs to pose a threat to national security taking advantage of the tsunami situation as the government has failed to specify the relief needed to cope with the situation after the natural disaster. ” It is not too late. The government can still do it. The NGOs will not attempt to donate items like helicopters and luxury vehicles as humanitarian aid which could pose a threat to the security of the country, if their items pass into wrong hands,” the PNM said. The PNM also queried as to how the number of light aircraft owned by the LTTE increased suddenly during the post tsunami period. ” There is no doubt that some NGOs have donated even earlier several items to the LTTE that militate against national security. Nobody could say for sure whether the two aircraft imported by certain NGOs are the first of such donations. The security forces had earlier reported that according to information in their possession the LTTE had only one light aircraft. Now that there are said to be two light aircraft, they are believed to have been received by the LTTE during the post tsunami period,” the PNM said.
