The A9 highway is likely to open to the general public by next week, once clearance has been received from the Defence Ministry, says the Government Information Department.
Plans are afoot to develop and modernize roads in the north and work on some have already commenced. The A-32 road is now under reconstruction, the Ministry of Highways revealed.
Repairs have been completed on 83 kilometres on this road using local funding and the government of China has come forward to provide additional funding to complete the reconstruction work on the highway, sources added.
Meanwhile, reconstruction work is also being carried out on the A9 highway, Silawathura-Murunkan road, Puttalam, Mannar and Thalaimannar roads.
