Fire on Yal Devi damage two compartments

A fire on the Thandikulam bound Yal Devi train this morning caused damage to two compartments of the train, Railway sources said.

An explosion of a gas cylinder in the train’s cafeteria has caused the fire, sources said.

The fire broke out as the train was nearing Saliyapura, these sources added. The train left Colombo for Thandikulam at 5.45 am today on schedule carrying passengers to the North. No passenger was hurt by the fire and the fire was doused with the help of the fire brigade.

Yal Devi resumed operations up to Thandikulam recently after a lapse of twenty years.

The rail line to the North was disrupted by LTTE terrorists during that period. However, the government troops completely crushed the LTTE in May this year.

Transport Minister, Dallas Alahapperuma on a directive by President Mahinda Rajapaksa repaired the track to commence operations up to Thandikulam.
