Rajapaksa leads SL polls; army surrounds Fonseka’s hotel

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa was on Wednesday leading the presidential polls amid accusations by rival candidate Sarath Fonseka that the elections had been rigged and his life was under threat.

Counting of votes in the bitterly contested elections was underway with Rajapaksa having taken an early lead over Fonseka, the former chief of the Lankan army.

According to initial reports, Rajapaksa had managed an average lead of 60 per cent in the results announced so far. Of the 39 electorate results announced, he had secured a win in 32. Read Full Story >>
