Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Cooperatives and Internal Trade affairs will strictly enforce the regulations introduced to make plastic crates use compulsory for transporting vegetables from Monday (11th June 2012).
The Ministry says that it has taken all the necessary measures to distribute plastic crates vegetable transporters.
The law pertaining to the transport of 11 types of vegetables and 10 types of fruits was introduced several months ago but the Ministry did not take action to implement it strictly due to the resistance from vegetable producers.
The Secretary of the Ministry Sunil S. Sirisena has said that the non-implementation of law caused injustice to the traders and farmers who began to use the plastic crates on the instructions of the government.
The government introduced these laws to minimize the post-harvest loss.
A ministry spokesman has told Hiru FM that the Ministry was monitoring whether the use of plastic crates was taking place properly.
According to the privately-run radio no lorries transporting vegetables had arrived at the Dambulla Economic Centre this morning.
