As Clashes Intensify few Soldiers still Missing

[ad#200×200]Armed clashes between the troops and terrorists turned intense Sunday (23) in the outer perimeter of KILINOCHCHI as troops, while advancing towards A-9 from AKKARAYANKULAM in the west and along the A-9 from KOKAVIL in the south, mounted massive attacks on LTTE strong points and earth bund.

Troops of the 57 Division and the Task Force 1 met stiff resistance from Tigers in the areas of ADAMPAN, ADAMPAN north, PUDUMURIPPUKULAM and THERUMURUKKANDY.

Intercepted Tiger transmissions confirmed that casualty figure of the terrorists had risen due to small arms and heavy weapon fire by the Army troops. Exchange of fire injured several soldiers and during the peak of the battle, a few soldiers had reportedly detached from the main formations. However, a search is on to trace the whereabouts of those soldiers.

The same afternoon troops of the Task Force-1 attacked an LTTE strongpoint at NIVIL causing damages to the position.

Meanwhile, main defence line in ANDANKULAM in WELIOYA was further expanded by the 59 Division troops Sunday following confrontations between 10.00 a.m. and 4.00 p.m..

At the same time, a terrorist counter attack of the troops in ANDANKULAM was successfully repulsed in a two-hour long clash between 3.00 p.m. and 5.00 p.m..

In the meantime, intermittent fighting occurred in KILALY, JAFFNA Sunday (23).
