The Kelaniya flyover, the first phase of which was constructed in record time, has now been completed and will be opened today (04) by Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayaka. The Second Phase of the Flyover was completed within 75 days.
The British Government has contributed Rs.1,050 million of the Rs. 2,100 million that went into the construction of this flyover.
The construction was supervised by British engineering company “Mabey & Johnson” Ltd and Access Engineering, Sri Lanka.
The Kelaniya flyover is the first of 222 such facilities to be constructed countrywide. The length of the Kelaniya flyover is 325 meters. Two lanes were completed under the first phase of the project. Construction of the first phase was completed in a record period of 61 days.
Over 75,000 vehicles travel along the Colombo-Kandy road every day and the flyover built across the Peliyagoda railway crossing is expected to resolve the long-standing problem of traffic congestion on this major route.
The flyover was named Jeyaraj Fernandopulle after the late minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle who was assassinated shortly after declaring the first two lanes open.
