Reconstruction of the television tower at Kokavil destroyed by the LTTE during their flight from the area is being accelerated and the tower will be operational soon, the government media said.
The 172-meter high transmission tower is being constructed at a cost of 400 million rupees under the guidance of the “Uthuru Wasanthaya” Task Force.
The Media Ministry and the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission are providing the required grants. A group of officials including Ministry Secretary W.B. Ganegala inspected the construction of the tower recently.
Once completed, the tower will fulfill the communication needs of the people in the Northern region to receive TV transmissions and also telephone facilities. It will be a common telecommunication broadcasting tower and will be shared by telecommunication operators and broadcasters.
The original tower was captured by the LTTE rebels to broadcast their clandestine transmissions. During the offensive in the North, the Sri Lankan troops recaptured the tower but the rebels blew up the structure before fleeing the area.
