The second military tribunal against former Army Commander and parliamentarian, General (retd.) Sarath Fonseka was postponed to 1:30 p.m. tomorrow.
Fonseka, who was elected to parliament recently while he was in military custody, did not attend the tribunal today citing he would give prominence to parliamentary meeting held today.
General Fonseka who is currently in military custody at the Navy Headquarters is facing two courts-martial. The second court-martial hears the charges of violating military procurement procedures against the retired military chief.
When asked from the counsels of Fonseka if they informed that their client was not participating in the military tribunal today, the lawyers pointed out that it was informed to the Army Commander.
MP Fonseka said in the parliament that the Army officials were preparing to take him to the military tribunal that was scheduled to be held at 1:00 p.m. today and raised a privileges issue requesting the Speaker to allow him to make a special statement in the parliament in the evening.
Meanwhile, Kandy district MP Mahindananda Aluthgamage addressing the parliamentary debate said that Sarath Fonseka was not a political prisoner and he was accused of misuse of public property in connivance with his son-in-law.
He also charged the suicide bomber who attacked the Army Commander near the entrance of the Army headquarters was known to have an affair with a another senior Army official.
