Shares plunge worsened due to foreign sell-off

[ad#200×200]Colombo: It was a devastating day at the Colombo bourse today with both indices recording worst ever slumps witnessed in the recent past. Al Share Price Index (ASPI) was down by a massive 85.40 points (4.49%) to close at 1815.17, which was below the 1900 level. Milanka Price Index (MPI) shed off a more sensitive 93.14 points (4.38%) to settle at 2034.03.

A turnover of Rs.236.43Mn was registered today. A large scale block deal was witnessed by Ceylinco Insurance PLC (CINS) with 500,000 shares having changed hands at Rs.205.00. The stock was also the highest contributor in terms of turnover with a value of Rs.103.56Mn. The share signed off at Rs.203.75. Sierra Cables PLC (SIRA) topped the volume list today with 0.95Mn shares. The stock ended at Rs.1.40.

Next in line volume wise were Blue Diamond Jewelery Worldwide PLC – non-voting – (BLUE-X) and Tess Agro Ltd. (TESS) with 0.95Mn and 0.78Mn shares respectively. Significant contributions to turnover were also made by John Keells Holdings PLC (JKH) and Distilleries Company of Sri Lanka PLC (DIST) with Rs.9.87Mn and Rs.9.20Mn respectively. Price losers outdid price gainers in a significant manner numbering 170 to a mere 4. Selling pressure of foreigners continued albeit in a less extensive context when compared with yesterday thus resulting in a net outflow of Rs.2.38Mn.
