Colombo: The Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe has left the country last night for an official visit in Norway, the main opposition United National Party said.
Issuing a special statement the UNP said the purpose of this Norwegian visit by Wickremasinghe is to hold several seminars on protecting media freedom and democratic institutes.
According to the statement, opposition leader expects to brief the Norway over the threats and pressures faced by Sri Lankan media institutes at the moment.
Additionally he hopes to gain attention on the assassination of Sunday Leader chief editor Lasantha Wickramathunga and several other Sri Lankan journalists during his Norwegian visit.
The United National Party said that the opposition leader would hold discussions with International Democratic Union members as the chairman of its Pacific Region Union.
