Sri Lanka Parliament approves to set up a Coast Guard unit

Sri Lanka Parliament today passed the Bill to establish a Coast Guard Department in the country in order to stop illegal activities in its territorial waters.

Prime Minister Rathnasiri Wickramanayaka said at the debate on the issue that the government has decided to establish the unit in order to control illegal activities using Sri Lanka’s territorial waters for drug trafficking and smuggling activities. The Bill sought to set up the Coast Guard Department to ensure the security of the coastal areas, maritime zones and the Sri Lanka territorial waters.
