Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa will be leaving on an official visit to Russia beginning February 5th. This is President’s first overseas visit since his re-election to a second term in office.
The President is expected to meet his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev and other Russian leaders. He will be discussing issues regarding bilateral relations between the two countries and economic assistance to Sri Lanka.
In a congratulatory message sent to President Rajapaksa upon his re-election, the Russian President expressed confidence that the Sri Lankan President would succeed in developing the country and the policies adopted by the President for economic development would settle the social and political issues.
Noting that Russia and Sri Lanka have maintained close and friendly ties based upon friendship and mutual respect for more than 50 years, the Russian President expressed optimism that the Sri Lankan President’s forthcoming visit to Russia will strengthen the longstanding relations between the two nations.
