June 15, Trincomalee: The Sri Lanka government has decided to remove restrictions on fishing in the Eastern seas completely starting today.
Speaking at a special ceremony yesterday morning in Trincomalee, Senior Presidential Advisor Basil Rajapaksa said fishermen could engage in fishing in the Eastern seas at any time of day starting today.
However, they can only fish in Trincomalee Harbour between 4.00 AM and 6.00 PM.
Parliamentarian Rajapaksa said the government has taken this decision to develop the Sri Lankan fisheries industry as it now controls the entire coastline.
During the three decades-long war, fishing in the area was restricted by the government for a few hours during the day.
