Sri Lankan Opposition Up In Arms Against Fonseka’s Court Martial

Opposition parties in Sri Lanka Wednesday were up in the arms against the court martial of former Army chief Sarath Fonseka, who played a key role in crushing the Tamil rebels last year, thus ending a two decades-long ethnic conflict in the island country.

Opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has asked the ruling government to table complete details of the court martial proceedings before Parliament. Flaying the court martial of the war hero in Parliament Wednesday, he asked the government to absolve him of all charges.

The Parliament had convened a special session for the first time after an Army officers’ tribunal had last week ruled that Fonseka had indulged in political activity while in harness.

Opposition members shouted slogans of “Shame, shame,” and “Pardon the war hero”, with the United National Party (UNP) and Democratic National Alliance (DNA) legislators taking the lead.

Though Fonseka was also present in Parliament, he did not participate in the demonstrations.
