The Tamil National Alliance today confirmed that it will support Rtd. General Sarath Fonseka at the upcoming Presidential Elections. When contacted by Ada Derana, TNA party sources said that the decision was reached last night and a formal announcement will be made today at a press briefing.
According to sources the party had discussed at length the re-merger of the North and East with General Fonseka and he had not shown any objection to the proposal.
Sources said that 18 of the 22 party members had been present at the meeting due to 3 being abroad and one being in CID custody. Sources claimed that 8 members had wanted to stay neutral and support neither of the two main candidates but the remaining 10 had wanted to support the General and the majorities’ decision has been taken.
Earlier both the UNP and the General’s office claimed that the TNA will support Fonseka however TNA parliamentarians denied the claim adding that it was not decided. Hence last night’s decision will finally end the week’s long speculation and promises the news of a possible MOU in the offing.
