UNP’s elephant: To be or not to be?

With anything to do with elephants running into controversies these days, the news of another elephantine endeavour is on the cards. This has less to do with the four legged pachyderms, but with a political alliance with the UNP. The new opposition alliance is to sign their agreement this month.

The eagerly discussed joint opposition alliance comprising the United National Party (UNP), the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC), Western Province People’s Front of Mano Ganeshan, The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (Mahajana Wing) of Mangala Samaraweera and the Nava Sihala Urumaya are to sign the agreement of alliance by August 15, political sources said.

While UNP sources said that no date has been fixed yet for the signing and a symbol has not been decided upon yet, the rebel group within the party has said that there would be no alliance of any sort if the UNP’s elephant symbol is discarded. One member has reported said that any attempt to change the party symbol would tantamount to committing suicide.
