Unrest in Kinniya as crowd storms GA office

Twenty-four (24) individuals taken into custody by police, in connection to the unrest in Kinniya which resulted in the attack on the Navy camp and a police jeep, have been released, Police Spokesman SP Prishantha Jayakody said.

The move comes in the wake of a large crowd surrounding the Kinniya GA office earlier today and demanding the immediate release of the individuals, arrested by Kinniya Police today (August 15) morning.

Demonstrating outside the Kinniya Government Agent’s office the group had also demanded that the navy camp in Kinniya be removed.

Talks were held with authorities afterwards at the GA office regarding the release of the suspects.

Two policemen and several civilians were injured following the tense situation near the Navy camp from last night after residents had witnessed an alleged “grease devil” enter the camp.
